Stan Van Gundy has agreed to a 4-year deal to be the new head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans.

Stan confirmed the Pelicans hire via Twitter, writing:

I’m excited to join a talented New Orleans Pelicans team. It will be an honor to work with our players and to work for Mrs. Benson and David Griffin, Trajan Langdon, their staff and the great people of New Orleans. I can’t wait to talk to our players and get the process started.

Stan is most known for the time he spent coaching the Orlando Magic during the Dwight Howard era.

Stan coached the Orlando Magic to the NBA Finals in 2009 and he made the playoffs seven out of his eight seasons as head coach for the Orlando Magic and the Miami Heat.

More recently Stan had his struggles coaching the Detroit Pistons, he was 152-176 in four seasons with the Pistons.

The Pelicans have a lot of young talent, but the standout is the 2019 number one pick, Zion Williamson.

Zion averaged 22.5 points in 24 games as a rookie, but his health and durability is a concern.

The sky is the limit for Zion Williamson pending he can get his weight under control and stay healthy.

Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball were acquired by the Pelicans from the Anthony Davis trade to the Lakers, and they both are young NBA talents with a chip on their shoulders and vindication in their hearts.

Jrue Holiday is the 30-year old veteran leader on the team, and he is a solid player in his own right.

It will be Stan’s job to bring the best out in this young team and make them a serious championship contender.

We wish Stan Van Gundy the best as the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans.
