Spike Lee‘s BlacKkKlansman opened strong at the box office with $10.7 million making it the iconic director’s third largest opening of all-time.
The film, starring John David Washington, Adam Driver and Laura Harrier, tells the true story of Ron Stallworth, is the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Determined to make a name for himself, Stallworth bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan.
The film received a standing ovation at Cannes and won the film festival’s top awards, the Grand Prix.
One moviegoer, Nponano Maikori, shared her experience of seeing BlacKkKlansman via social media.
We just finished watching this and it’s one of only a few times that I’ve been to a movie and the end credits started rolling and no one moved.
The last few frames are as powerful as it gets and @officialspikelee used his last 5 minutes well! No one talked as we filed out of the theatre and I’m sure the reasons may have been different for each of us.
I never thought a movie recalling PAST events could feel so present. But here we are. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie! You’ll be angry. You’ll be sad. You’ll be bewildered. You’ll be frustrated.
