Shaquille O’Neal To Pay For Malachi Hemphill’s Funeral
Shaquille O’Neal is a big man with an even bigger heart.
The NBA Hall of Famer has stepped in to help the family of the Georgia teen who accidentally killed himself on Instagram Live by offering to pay for his funeral service.
On Monday, 13-year-old Malachi Hemphill was playing with a gun on Instagram Live while his friends watched. One of the friends allegedly asked him why wasn’t there a clip in the gun.
They told Malachi to put the clip into the gun. As he was putting the clip in the gun discharged fatally wounding him.
He was rushed to Grady Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Via 11 Alive:
“I heard a big boom. I couldn’t tell if it was a gunshot or what.”
Shaniqua Stephens had just watched her 13-year-old son take out the trash Monday evening when she heard a noise.
“I just knew that it was something that was wrong,” she said.
She and her daughter ran upstairs and found him. “We kicked in the door. We found him just laying there in a pool of blood,” Stephens recounted. “My daughter screamed and said, ‘Mom turn his phone off!’ As I proceeded to look at his phone he was on Instagram Live.”
While trying to cope with the tragedy of losing Malachi, the family was faced with another dilemma…they didn’t have life insurance on Malachi.
That’s where Shaq stepped in to help the family in need.
My heart and deepest condolences go out to Malachi’s family and my gratitude to Shaquille O’Neal for having a heart of gold.
