Philando Castile’s mother kept her son’s legacy alive by paying off the lunch debt of hundreds of high school seniors.

Valerie Castile presented an $8,000 check to Robbinsdale Cooper High School in New Hope, Minnesota last week to wipe out the lunch debt of seniors who are preparing to graduate.

Ms. Castile told CBS affiliate WCCO unpaid lunch debt was something her late son was very passionate about:

He’d pay for children’s lunch meals out of his own pocket instead of letting a child go hungry that day he would pay for it himself.

The check was provided by the Philando Castile Relief Foundation, set up after his death to help victims of gun violence and police violence.

Philando Castile was fatally shot on July 6, 2016, by a St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez during a routine traffic stop.

Yanez was not charged in the shooting. Philando’s family was awarded a $3 million settlement.
