The official trailer for Nina, the Nina Simone biopic starring Zoe Saldana dropped on Wednesday and it did NOT go over well at all.
Fans took to social media to express their outrage over the blatant colorism in Hollywood that would result in Zoe wearing blackface in order to portray the High Priestess of Soul.
Some called out Zoe for playing herself, while others placed the blame on casting when there are other actresses of color like Viola Davis, Danai Gurira, Uzo Aduba, and Lupita Nyong’o, who would have slayed the role. But, the question remains…would they have taken the role?
Nina Simone’s daughter, Simone Kelly, voiced her disapproval of casting Zoe in a New York Times interview where she said, “My mother was raised at a time when she was told her nose was too wide, her skin was too dark. Appearance-wise, this is not the best choice.”
Things got real when Zoe Saldana dropped this tweet in response to her critics.
