On Monday (Oct 15) evening, I had the pleasure of attending a press dinner at STK Atlanta with Jocko Sims, star of NBC’s new hit drama, “New Amsterdam.”
Jocko stars on the show as Dr. Floyd Reynolds, a cardiologist at New Amsterdam who is woke, but catches a case of jungle fever from time to time.
During our fun convo, Jocko talked about all of the dialogue his character’s relationship with Dr. Bloom (Janet Montgomery) has sparked and shared his own experience with interracial dating.
He also shared his similarities to his character and gave us the scoop on why he enjoys filming in Atlanta.
What I found most interesting is when Jocko Sims revealed he wanted to be a doctor when he was in high school and now he has the awesome opportunity to play one on TV.
I wanted to be a real doctor when I was in high school.
I had a medical symbol on my high school ring. I was in the top 5 percent of my class. I was the president of my Spanish Club…National Honor Society – I was like, ‘I am going to do this!’
I got to college my first year and said, ‘I do not want to be in school for the next 12 years.’
I’ve always been creative, so I took a little theater class…moved to L.A., finished up at UCLA – got my BA in theater.
Went on my first audition – booked it! Went on my second audition – booked it.
I was like, ‘Okay, this is what I am supposed to be doing.’

Tune in to “New Amsterdam” every Tuesday at 10/9c on NBC.
