Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos admitted on Tuesday that he “screwed up the internal communication” related to the employee backlash in response to Dave Chappelle‘s new comedy special, “The Closer.”

Obviously, I screwed up that internal communication.

First and foremost, I should have led with a lot more humanity. Meaning, I had a group of employees who were definitely feeling pain and hurt from a decision we made.

And I think that needs to be acknowledged up front before you get into the nuts and bolts of anything.

Although Sarandos regrets the tone of the emails he sent to employees earlier this month in response to their concerns with Chappelle’s comedy special, he stands firm on not pulling “The Closer” from the network.

We have articulated to our employees that there are going to be things you don’t like.

There are going to be things that you might feel are harmful. But we are trying to entertain a world with varying tastes and varying sensibilities and various beliefs, and I think this special was consistent with that.

A group of employees calling itself Team Trans* scheduled a rally outside Netflix’s 13-story Sunset Boulevard offices in Los Angeles, where activists, public figures and other supporters plan to present Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos with a “list of asks.”

See video below.

Sarandos sent a memo to the entire Netflix staff last week saying while some employees may have been “left angry, disappointed and hurt” he didn’t feel the content translated to “real-world harm.”
