The gentleman called the non-emergency line of the Fort Worth police department to conduct a welfare check after his niece told him the front door was open and the lights in the home were on around 2 a.m.

James initially went over to the home on his own to check things out, but he left and opted to call the police instead.

He told reporters, “If I had never dialed the police department, she’d still be alive.”

Ava DuVernay took to social media to share Mr. Smith was heavy on her mind and her heart.

Xavier University of Louisiana President Reynold Verret released the following statement:

By now, we all know the routine. They will try to vilify Atatiana Jefferson every which way possible.

But, we won’t let it happen. She was another brilliant and sweet soul snatched by police in Texas.

My sincerest prayers and condolences to Atatiana’s family and all who are hurting and impacted by this senseless loss.
