Marshae Jones Indicted Over Unborn Baby’s Death After Being Shot In The Stomach

Marshae Jones, an Alabama woman who was shot in the stomach, has been charged with manslaughter for the death of her unborn baby.

An Alabama woman, who was shot in the stomach, has been indicted for the death of her unborn baby.

27-year-old Marshae Jones was arrested and charged with manslaughter six months after she was shot in the stomach and lost her baby girl.

According to the grand jury indictment, Jones “intentionally caused the death of her unborn baby by initiating a fight knowing she was five months pregnant.”

The altercation between Marshae Jones and Ebony Jemison went down last December at a Dollar General in Birmingham, Alabama.

The women were fighting over the father of Marshae’s baby. At some point, Ebony retrieved her firearm and shot Marshae in the stomach.

The grand jury determined Ebony Jemison acted in self-defense and the manslaughter charge against her was dropped.

Lt. Danny Reid of the Pleasant Grove Police Department said:

When a five-month pregnant woman initiates a fight and attacks another person, I believe some responsibility lies with her as to any injury to her unborn child.

That child is dependent on its mother to try to keep it from harm, and she shouldn’t seek out unnecessary physical altercations.

Shortly after Marshae Jones’ arrest, abortion rights groups came to her defense, citing the case as an example of the harsh treatment of people of color and the criminalization of pregnancy.

Alabama recently passed one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country.

Marshae Jones’ family says she did not start the fight with Ebony Jemison and losing her baby has been punishment enough.

Jones was released Thursday afternoon after posting $50,000 bond. If convicted, she faces 20 years in prison.

What are your thoughts on this case and who do you feel (if anyone) should be held accountable for the death of the unborn baby?
