The assault happened back in January outside of a mall in Asheville. When video of incident went viral, it sparked many online debates with some calling it a racist attack and others calling it self-defense.

We still don’t know what led up to the altercation, but Bell’s attorney, Andy Banzhoff, claims the group of girls were harassing a woman at a bookstore and David Steven Bell intervened.

Banzhoff said, “His actions were in an effort to defend himself against the perceived threat from a large pack of youth who had trapped and surrounded him.”

Bell pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor assault on a child under 12 and one count of assault on a female.

He was sentenced to one 60-day suspended sentence and placed on unsupervised probation for 12 months.

Bell was sentenced to participate in a racial justice workshop, anger management counseling, community service, and to pay court costs.

The district attorney’s office said they dropped a third charge relating to an alleged assault on a female because they weren’t able to subpoena or contact the victim in the case.
