Just as I was starting to make peace with the cancellation of “Underground,” HBO has announced Misha Green‘s “Lovecraft Country” will not be returning for a second season.

In a statement to Deadline, HBO said:

We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country. We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.

The 10-episode first season of “Lovecraft Country” followed Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he journeys with his childhood friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) on a road trip from Chicago across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father Montrose (Michael Kenneth Williams).

Their search-and-rescue turns into a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and monstrous creatures that could be ripped from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback.

The season finale has become the most watched new episode of an original series on HBO Max in its first day of availability.

After the news of the cancellation, the series creator, Misha Green, took to Twitter to share with us what we would have gotten in season 2.

A taste of the Season 2 Bible. Wish we could have brought you #LovecraftCountry: Supremacy. Thank you to everyone who watched and engaged.✊???????? #noconfederate

I really wish a streaming platform, perhaps Netflix, would pick up this great show to allow Misha Green to keep giving us her excellence.

What are your thoughts on the cancellation of “Lovecraft Country?”
