Lifetime is trying to squeeze blood from an R. Kelly turnip!
On the heels of obliterating what was left of the troubled R&B singer’s career with “Surviving R. Kelly,” their 3-part Dream Hampton-produced docuseries that chronicled over 2 decades of allegations of sexual misconduct, underage sex, and abuse – the network has announced a forthcoming 2-hour follow-up special.
“Surviving R. Kelly: The Impact,” hosted by Soledad O’Brien, will examine how the three-part series, which aired in January, affected the conversation about sexual violence and popular culture at large.
The special will also include clips from “Surviving R. Kelly” and interviews with journalists, legal experts and psychologists about Kelly and the accusations against him.
“The Impact” will also take an “in-depth look” at the singer’s tense CBS interview with Gayle King.
I’m sure many of you – well…ride or die R. Kelly fans are wondering why Lifetime is doing this special.
I can see two reasons very clearly:
- The follow-up special will keep (some folks) motivated to keep their feet on R-ah’s neck for his allegedly dirty deeds and the other – well…ratings!
- The “Surviving R. Kelly” docuseries set a ratings record for the network and it also pulled a lot of skeletons out of Robert Sylvester’s closet.
Since the docuseries aired in January, many of his alleged victims have come forward, the singer has been charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, and he’s been jailed twice.
Why not go in for another round?
“Surviving R. Kelly: The Impact” is slated to air on May 4.
