Kim Coles Opens Up About The Dark Side Of Tabloid “Sources”
On a recent episode of the “Re-Living Single Podcast,” Kim Coles reminded us all to be careful about believing everything we read, especially when it’s coming from a so-called “source.”
The “Living Single” star and comedian peeled back the curtain on how one false tabloid story nearly ruined her life and how gossip outlets manage to publish lies while avoiding legal trouble.
Kim explained that the story in question was completely fabricated, but the way tabloids word their reporting keeps them protected from lawsuits.
How One False Story Almost Changed Kim Coles’ Life
“I was in one of the rags,” Kim recalled. “A story that was completely untrue, but it was fabricated that this was happening and that was happening.”
When she later interviewed a big-name figure in the tabloid world, she asked how they could print things that were blatantly false. His response was both revealing and infuriating.
“We don’t say that it’s true,” he told her. “We say that it’s true that someone told us this.”
That one sentence exposed how tabloids use phrases like “a source says” or “an insider claims” to legally cover themselves while still spreading damaging rumors.
Kim later learned that some people even get paid to make up and share these false “insider” stories with the press.
“That could have ruined my life,” Kim said. “Because that thing that you printed was not true.”
A Lesson From Kim Coles For Today’s Media Climate
In a time when clickbait headlines and gossip blogs thrive on sensationalism, Kim Coles’ message is a necessary reminder to always question the source.
Her transparency offers a peek behind the curtain of an industry that often values traffic over truth.
As someone who’s been reporting entertainment stories for years, I can tell you that if the words “insider” or “source” pop up, proceed with caution.
That’s exactly why I refuse to run stories that rely on anonymous gossip.
Kim Coles’ honesty was refreshing, eye-opening, and a much-needed reminder that integrity still matters in entertainment journalism.
