Georgia police have launched a fresh investigation into the 2013 death of Kendrick Johnson, the student who was found dead inside a rolled-up gym mat.

On January 11, 2013, 17-year-old Kendrick was discovered upside down in an upright mat behind the bleachers at Lowndes County High School in Valdosta, Georgia.

After a four-month investigation, officials claimed Kendrick Johnson died of “positional asphyxia” while trying to retrieve a shoe that had fallen in the center of the mat.

His parents, Kenneth and Jacquelyn Johnson believe their son was killed. A third-party autopsy done for the family appears to support their theory saying Kendrick died from “unexplained, apparent non-accidental blunt force trauma.”

Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk told WCTV Tuesday:

We’re starting fresh, so it’s like a brand new investigation, no predisposed opinions, can’t have that. We’ll be looking at all the read material and obviously, we’ll be doing some more interviews.

The Kendrick Johnson and his family deserves justice.

I hope this new investigation is thorough and the person(s) responsible for his death are held accountable.
