Jason Meade charged with murder in shooting death of Casey Goodson Jr.

Jason Meade, the former Ohio sheriff’s deputy who fatally shot Casey Goodson Jr., was charged with murder on Thursday (December 2).

Meade, a 17-year veteran of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, was indicted on one count of reckless homicide and two charges of murder.

On December 4, 2020, Casey was entering his grandmother’s home carrying Subway sandwiches when Meade, who was looking for an unrelated fugitive, shot him in the back six times.

Meade’s attorney claims Casey Goodson Jr. pointed a gun at the officer.

I would also like to point out that the shooting was not recorded on body or dash camera footage.

The case remains under criminal investigation by the U.S. attorney’s office with help from the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

The indictment comes nearly one year after Casey Goodson Jr. was killed.

His mother, Tamala Payne, said she was “overwhelmed with joy” at the news of the indictment.

It’s been a year of sadness, it’s been a year of grief, it’s been a year of pain.

But I know that every day of this year, that my family and I wake up and just fight for what’s right.

Jason Meade, who retired from the force over the summer, is expected to enter a not guilty plea during his court appearance on Friday (December 3).
