As soon as Jussie Smollett was released from jail he headed straight to the set of “Empire.”
Apparently, it was a wasted trip because the Fox drama has elected to remove the singer and actor from the remaining episodes of the season.
Fox released the following statement:
The events of the past few weeks have been incredibly emotional for all of us. Jussie has been an important member of our EMPIRE family for the past five years and we care about him deeply. While these allegations are very disturbing, we are placing our trust in the legal system as the process plays out.
We are also aware of the effects of this process on the cast and crew members who work on our show and to avoid further disruption on set, we have decided to remove the role of ‘Jamal’ from the final two episodes of the season.
Lee Daniels, Danny Strong, Brett Mahoney, Brian Grazer, Sanaa Hamri, Francie Calfo and Dennis Hammer all signed off on the decision to remove Jussie.
When Jussie arrived on the set on Thursday, he apologized to everyone and insisted he’s innocent of staging his own attack.
Unfortunately, his castmates are reportedly furious and weren’t trying to hear it. They reportedly want Jussie gone.
I found it interesting that none of the “Empire” cast, including his bestie Gabourey Sidibe, have spoken out in support of him after he was charged.
