Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer, who murdered George Floyd by kneeling on his neck for nearly 10 minutes, was sentenced to 22.5 years (270 months) in prison.

The decision was 10 years on top of the guideline sentencing suggestion of 150 months.

“This is based on your abuse of a position of trust and authority and also the particular cruelty shown to George Floyd,” Judge Cahill said.

Before Chauvin was sentenced, George’s family, including his daughter, Gianna Floyd, his nephew, Brandon Williams, and his brothers, Terrence Floyd and Philonise Floyd, made heartbreaking victim impact statements.

Derek’s mother, Carolyn Pawlenty, also spoke on his behalf and painted him out to be a loving, caring, and incredible man. She even went as far as saying he was innocent.

Sadly, that man did not show up on May 25, 2020.

Chauvin spoke briefly before he was sentenced and even offered his condolences to the Floyd family.

Do you think Derek Chauvin’s sentence was appropriate?
