Darnella Frazier, the Minnesota teenager who recorded the murder of George Floyd, was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize citation on Friday, June 11.

Pulitzer board co-chair Mindy Marqués said:

We want to note that the board has awarded a special citation to Darnella Frazier, the teenage witness, who filmed and posted the transformative video that jolted viewers and spurred protests against police brutality around the world.

Darnella was 17-years-old when she recorded and posted the video. She said after the video went viral she had to relocate for safety reasons. She also said she suffered from anxiety and insomnia.

Despite the trauma she suffered, Darnella said she is still proud of herself for exposing the truth.

She posted a heartfelt message to her IG account on the 1-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death, recounting her experience.

Congratulations to Darnella Frazier, a courageous and intelligent American hero.
