He drove from another Florida city that he planned to return to after confronting the singer Friday at 10:30 p.m., according to Orlando Police Chief John Mina.

“She was doing a meet-and-greet, just signing autographs and selling merchandise. This white male approached her and opened fire, striking her,” Mina said. “We believe he came here to commit this crime.”

The singer’s brother, Marcus Grimmie, tackled the gunman after he opened fire at the Plaza Live theater, police said. During the melee the madman committed suicide by shooting himself.

There is no evidence indicating Christina knew the shooter and the motive for the shooting is still unknown.

Christina’s publicist issued the following statement:

This is such a terrible tragedy.

Continued prayers to the Grimmie family.
