When it comes to sampling many legendary artists guard their music catalogs with their lives.

Chaka Khan recently revealed during an appearance on “Watch What Happens Live!,” that she was very displeased with how Kanye West chose to use a sample of her classic tune, “Through The Fire.”

She explained to Andy Cohen:

He called me when he just got out of the hospital.

He said, ‘You were so instrumental in my healing process. I had to change the words a little bit to the song, but I had to eat through a wire, you know, and I was wired shut, through a straw.

It meant that much to me and it really got my heart.

But, when the song was released and Kanye sped up the sample as he did most of the samples in the early stages of his career – Chaka was hot!

I was pissed. I was a little insulted — not insulted, I thought it was stupid.

It’s unfortunate, she never told Kanye how she felt about the track. But, I’m sure the checks didn’t hurt.

Oh, and there was that one time back in St. Olaf – when she performed the song with him at the VMAs.

For those of you who need a refresher on how Ye used the sample – list to the songs below.
