“Catfish” Star Ashley Sawyer Dies Of A Suspected Heroin Overdose
Ashley Sawyer, who appeared on season 2 of MTV’s “Catfish,” passed away on Saturday in Alabama. She was 23 years old.
Authorities were called to an apartment in suburban Birmingham early Saturday morning about a woman in medical distress, Hoover Police Lt. Charles McDonald said. Alabama police believe drugs may have played a factor in Ashley’s death.
“We are investigating, but early indicators are this was possibly related to a drug overdose, possibly heroin,” McDonald said, adding that officials won’t be sure of Sawyer’s cause of death until a blood toxicology test is done.
During a “Catfish” catch-up special, Ashley revealed she was staying in a sober living facility after struggling with addiction.
MTV released a statement saying, “MTV is deeply saddened to learn that Ashley Sawyer has passed away. Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.”
Ashley appeared on a 2013 installment of the docu-series to meet Michael Fortunato face-to-face after carrying on an online relationship.

Sadly, one month after their episode aired, Michael passed away from a pulmonary embolism at the age of 26.
At the time of her death, Ashley’s sister stated that she had completed a program at the aforementioned facility and was residing in her own apartment in Alabama and working at Panera.
My condolences.
