Jupiter Hammon
Jupiter Hammon was a black poet who became the first African-American writer to be published in the United States.
He was born into slavery in 1711 and lived his life as a devout Christian.
Jupiter died before 1806. He was never emancipated.
Jupiter Hammon is considered one of the founders of African-American literature.
