Bishop Charles H. Ellis III has issued an apology after he was called out by fans for “groping” Ariana Grande‘s breasts after her performance at Aretha Franklin‘s funeral.
After Ariana sang “Natural Woman,” Bishop brought her over to the podium and put his arm around her waist.
He goes on to tell a joke about how he thought her name was a new item at Taco Bell.
The entire moment was uncomfy to say the least.
Bishop Ellis issued an apology and stated he meant no harm in any way from the unintentional inappropriate contact with Ariana to the joke (some deemed racist) about her name.
It would never be my intention to touch any woman’s breast…I don’t know I guess I put my arm around her. Maybe I crossed the border, maybe I was too friendly or familiar but again, I apologize.
I hug all the female artists and the male artists. Everybody that was up, I shook their hands and hugged them. That’s what we are all about in the church. We are all about love.
The last thing I want to do is to be a distraction to this day. This is all about Aretha Franklin.
I personally and sincerely apologize to Ariana and to her fans and to the whole Hispanic community. When you’re doing a program for nine hours you try to keep it lively, you try to insert some jokes here and there.
Ariana Grande was also a hot topic of conversation as many debated over whether or not her dress was appropriate for Aretha’s funeral.
Just a mess all around.
