March 7 will mark the 50th anniversary of the March on Selma and Bloody Sunday and there will be about 40 different events going on in Selma, Alabama.
One of the most talked about events is BET’s three-hour concert featuring Rick Ross, Doug E. Fresh, Bill Withers, Harry Belafonte, and Vanilla Ice. *record scratches* Yes, I said Vanilla Ice.
Paxton Baker, general manager and executive vice president of Centric TV and president of BET Event Productions told AL.com that he and Harry Belafonte, who are co-artistic directors, only had three weeks to put together a line up and Vanilla Ice was the perfect fit.
Vanilla Ice was in the Soul Train Awards two years ago and he’s a really cool person. When we call him for things he likes working with us and we like working with him.
He’s one of the people we call to participate in things with us, and if he can do it he absolutely will. I sent him a text and within two minutes his response was two words: ‘I’m in.’
Vanilla Ice is scheduled to perform one song of his own and he will also participate in a performance of “Self Destruction” with Rick Ross, Doug E. Fresh, Bell Biv DeVoe, Flava Flav, D-Nice, MC Lyte, and others.
Hopefully, they will keep an eye on all of the equipment so Vanilla Ice doesn’t end up in another misunderstanding because he “found something.”
