The Atlanta Falcons waived Prince Shembo after he was arrested and charged with felony aggravated cruelty to animals for kicking his ex-girlfriend’s dog to death.

On April 19, Shembo’s ex-girlfriend, Denicia Williams, contacted police to report her former boyfriend had killed her Yorkie, Dior.

Williams says she had taken Dior to Prince’s home four days earlier. At some point during her visit, she left Prince Shembo and Dior unattended. When she returned, she found Dior unresponsive.

Denicia stated she got some water for Dior and he stuck out his tongue trying to drink the water, but he couldn’t.

She then poured the entire bottle of water on Dior, but he didn’t react. That’s when she wrapped Dior in a towel and rushed him to the Duluth Animal Hospital where he died a short time later.
According to the police report, when Denicia spoke to Prince he asked her, “What if I told you I kicked your dog?” She asked him if it was just once and he replied, “No.”

The police report also states that Prince Shembo told Denicia he was thinking about leaving the country because he knows how much time he would do in prison for cruelty to animals.

A necropsy, conducted at the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter and tissue samples sent to the University of Georgia determined Dior had significant internal injuries and the cause of death was blunt force trauma.

Dior had a fractured rib, thoracic hemorrhage, extensive bruising and hemorrhage in the muscles in her front leg and shoulders, fractured liver, abdominal hemorrhage, hemorrhage between the esophagus and trachea, head trauma, hemorrhage and edema in lungs, and hemorrhage in the left eye with internal injuries.

Shembo’s attorney Jerry Froelich, says it was a deadly accident and his client is heartbroken over the incident.

“He was putting the dog in the cage and the dog bit him. Bit his hand and he reflexed and kicked the dog,” Froelich said. “He didn’t mean to kill the dog. He didn’t go out to do that. He kicked it. You see the size of him, it’s a small dog and that’s what happened.”

Denicia Williams’ stepmother said the 254-pound NFL player was jealous of Dior.

“She is attached to the dog. He had wanted her attention more than the dog, and I think that’s what it was,” Sherron Williams said.

Prince Shembo turned himself in to the Gwinnett County Jail on Friday night and was released after posting $15,000 bond.

The Atlanta Falcons dropped Shembo like a bad habit after they learned of his charges. The organization released a short and sweet statement:

We are aware of the charges that have been filed against Prince Shembo. We are extremely disappointed that one of our players is involved in something like this. Accordingly, we have decided to waive Prince Shembo.

In 2010, when Shembo was a linebacker at Notre Dame, he was investigated for allegedly sexually assaulting a Saint Mary’s College freshman in his dorm room.

10 days later, the 19-year-old woman killed herself by taking an overdose of the antidepressant Effexor.
