Atatiana Jefferson‘s father, Marquis Jefferson, was granted a temporary restraining order on Friday that allows him to halt her scheduled funeral service on Saturday (October 19) at The Potter’s House in Dallas.

Mr. Jefferson is apparently at odds with Atatiana’s aunt, Bonita Body, who planned her funeral with other family members without his input.

But, Dallas County Judge Brenda Hull Thompson signed an order blocking Ms. Body and Golden Gate Funeral Home “from exercising any activities related to the wake, funeral preparations, and burial.”

In his complaint, Marquis Jefferson said the funeral home violated the Texas Health and Safety Code by denying his involvement although he is Atatiana’s father and he should have priority in organizing the service.

Despite the disheartening feud, Mr. Jefferson says he has a great relationship with Atatiana Jefferson’s mother and her siblings, who uses the last name Carr, and they are more than welcome to attend the services he plans.

Attorney Lee Merritt took to Facebook to announce Atatiana Jefferson’s funeral services have been postponed.

He noted:

This family, like most families, is dealing with internal disputes. Unfortunately, due to the public outcry concerning Atatiana’s murder, they are being forced to go through this tragedy publicly. Please respect their privacy as the family resolves this conflict.

Marquis is planning to have Atatiana’s funeral service on Thursday.

Sacramento Kings forward Harrison Barnes and Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Malik Johnson have volunteered to cover the funeral and burial costs.

Barnes told NBC:

My wife and I wanted to do something for that family.

It was a tragic situation that happened. No one should be killed during a wellness check, but the biggest thing is, anytime someone has to go through that, the last thing they want to have to worry about is trying to come up with money for a funeral.

It’s so disappointing and disheartening to learn the family is beefing over funeral arrangements in the wake of such a horrible tragedy.
