My grandmother always said, “No parent should ever have to bury their child.”
Atatiana Jefferson‘s father spoke with CBS Dallas about the tragic and senseless police shooting of his only daughter.
Marquis Jefferson woke up to a phone call from Atatiana’s mother informing him that she had been shot and killed by Fort Worth police.
He talked about how smart his daughter was and how much she loved to read.
When she was growing up, I read to her a lot. I bought her a lot of books. Oh, she loved to read all the time. Her mother would tell me ‘She’s in there reading, reading, reading.’
Mr. Jefferson went on to share he doesn’t blame Atatiana’s neighbor, James Smith, who called the non-emergency line for police to come out and conduct a welfare check.
I have nothing against the neighbor. If you see something going on at my house with my daughter…you need to call police. But it’s the way that the police acted.

Marquis Jefferson is placing the blame for this tragedy exactly where it belongs – on the police!
You have to know that was somebody’s daughter. Somebody loved her and there was a better way. It didn’t have to be like that.
Mr. Jefferson made one thing absolutely clear – he wants justice – not hugs!
Unlike Botham Jean, I don’t want no hug. That’s my one and only daughter.
I’ll never forget that.

Sending continued prayers and love to the Jefferson family during this inconceivable time.
