A Georgia grand jury has officially indicted three men for the February killing of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery.

Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael, and William “Roddie” Bryan have been indicted on charges of malice murder, four counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment.

Despite the Georgia legislature passing the hate crimes bill on Tuesday (June 23), Cobb District Attorney Joyette Holmes said the bill is not retroactive and cannot be applied to Ahmaud’s case.

Holmes did say Ahmaud’s family is “ecstatic” to learn of the indictment because it is one step closer to getting justice for Ahmaud.

Attorney Benjamin Crump took to social media in reaction to the indictment:

So far so good. But, we still have a long way to go.
