Aariel Maynor, the man accused of fatally shooting philanthropist Jacqueline Avant, has been formally charged with her murder.

The 29-year-old Los Angeles man was charged with one count of murder, attempted murder, and felony with a firearm, as well as two counts of residential burglary with a person present.

Maynor, who was out on parole, allegedly broke into the home of Jacqueline and Clarence Avant around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 1, and shot and killed Mrs. Avant with an AR-15.

He also took a shot at their private security guard and missed, leading to the attempted murder charges.

Clarence was not injured during the robbery.

Jacqueline was rushed to the hospital, but she did not survive.

She was 81.

Aariel Maynor was captured by police about an hour after the fatal shooting during the commission of another burglary after he accidentally shot himself in the foot.

District Attorney Gascón said in a statement:

Mrs. Avant was a treasured member of our community. Her generosity and good will touched so many lives.

My office is working closely with the Los Angeles and Beverly Hills police departments in the investigation and prosecution of this case.

We must continue to work together to hold accountable the people who commit violent crimes against our community.

Maynor is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday (December 7) in Los Angeles Superior Court.
