Cyntoia’s Mother
Cyntoia’s biological mother, Georgina Mitchell, was 16-years-old when she became pregnant with her. She admits to drinking up to a fifth a day while pregnant.
Georgina began using crack cocaine when Cynthoia was 8-months-old put her up for adoption when she was 2-years-old and was taken in by Ellenette Brown.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
Due to her mother’s heavy drinking during her pregnancy, Cyntoia suffers from Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder which affected her brain and showed up on medical brain scans. The disorder also causes Cyntoia to suffer from paranoia.
Child Sex Slave
Despite having a somewhat stable home with Ms. Brown, the lack of stability and mental development led to Cyntoia becoming a runaway. She was forced into prostitution by a pimped known as “Kutthroat,” who brandished guns at her, raped her and beat her.
The Murder
On August 6, 2004, Cyntoia Brown was picked up by a 43-year-old real estate agent named, Johnny Allen, who negotiated sex with the teen for $150. He took her back to his home.
Cyntoia shot him in the back of the head with a .40-caliber handgun and confessed she was afraid he was reaching for a gun to kill her.
The Sentencing
Cyntoia was arrested for Johnny Allen’s death. After six hours of deliberating, a jury convicted Cyntoia of first degree murder, felony murder and especially aggravated robbery.
Under Tennessee law, the 16-year-old was sentenced to life in prison. She will be eligible for parole after serving 51 years. She will be 67.
Under today’s laws, Cyntoia Brown would have been treated as a child human trafficking victim.
