The family of the 20-year-old South Carolina girl, who gouged her own eyes out in a drug-induced haze is speaking out in hopes of preventing another family from having to endure the same nightmare.
Kaylee Muthart is permanently blind after she literally scratched her eyeballs out in front of an Anderson church on Feb 6. She was found holding one eyeball in her hand.
Doctors believe Kaylee was high on tainted methamphetamine and began hallucinating. She believed the world was “upside down” and needed to sacrifice her eyes in order to get to heaven.
Kaylee fought off good samaritans, who tried to help her.
Emergency responders were able to render aid and airlift her to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where she remains under care.
As you can imagine, Kaylee’s mother, Katy Tompkins, is mortified by what’s happened to her daughter.
She told People:
That was a struggle, I can’t even explain that feeling when I found out, it was horrifying. Complete terror. I was thankful she was alive, but I knew something was wrong with her.
This is something you never think is going to happen to you, but it did.
A lot of the mothers I talked to have kids that have been addicted to heroin for 10, 15 years and I’m like, ‘How did you get through it?’ My daughter was doing it for six months and it literally tore me up.
Kaylee will have to get prosthetics to maintain her facial structure.
My prayers to her and her mother.
