Common Wins First Emmy For ’13th’ Song ‘Letter To The Free,’ He’s One Step Away From EGOT (Video)
Common Wins An Emmy
Chicago stand up! Common scooped his first Emmy Award for his song, “Letter to the Free,” from Ava DuVernay‘s documentary film, 13th.
Now that he’s won an Emmy, Common is officially one step away from an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony).
The “Glory” rapper scooped an Oscar in 2015 (Selma), he already has three Grammy Awards, and now he has an Emmy. C’mon Tony Award!
The beloved rapper and actor took to social media to express his gratitude after winning his Emmy.
Although I’m honored and excited beyond belief for this award, my motivation for doing this song was from the heart like it always is. This award is for all the incarcerated people in the prison system and for justice. In the words of the late great Phife, “I’ll never let a statue tell me how nice I am…”. We have more work to do and this is only the beginning. So please don’t think for 1 second that my passion for justice stops here. Thank You @televisionacad @netflix @ava @karriemriggins1 @robertglasper @bilalmusic #Elena #Roy #Vernis and everyone involved with this project. #ImagineJustice

13th also won Emmys for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, Writing for Nonfiction Programs and Outstanding Motion Design.
